This serene home in Palavakkam was designed for a family who envisioned a space that was simple, cozy, and free from excess, while still reflecting personal style and regional character. With its proximity to the beach, the design naturally embraced elements of coastal living, but with a warm, Indian soul.
The client’s key request was to avoid false ceilings, favoring clean lines and breathable volume. In response, we introduced a unique design element — handcrafted wooden cornices that framed the ceilings. These not only brought in a touch of rustic elegance, but also became a subtle nod to traditional Indian interiors, elevating the simplicity with texture and warmth. To complement the coastal location, we infused the interiors with a muted, sea-inspired palette, highlighted by gentle shades of teal blue. This color weaves through the space in measured doses — on walls, furnishings, and accents — evoking the nearby ocean without overpowering the earthy base tones.
A key feature of this home is the thoughtful incorporation of manual artwork inside arched niches. These handcrafted pieces replaced the expected wallpapers and were developed in collaboration with artisans, ensuring that every arch told its own story. Each niche is edged with subtle wall beading, transforming it into a design feature while also serving a functional purpose — creating a space to display curated wall plates that reflect the home’s thematic narrative. The layout presented a design challenge: a long, linear hall that lacked spatial definition. We addressed this by introducing a custom-designed movable partition, enabling the space to shift between open living and intimate privacy based on daily needs. This intervention redefined the usability of the space without introducing bulk or visual noise.
Throughout the home, finishes are intentionally light and natural — soft wood tones, breathable textiles, and clean-lined furniture contribute to a calming atmosphere. Storage elements and wardrobes follow the same language — minimal, functional, and elegant, using a light color palette and refined detailing. The Palavakkam residence is a perfect example of how understated design can be rich with detail and soul. Every decision — from material to layout — was made with the family’s lifestyle, values, and context in mind, resulting in a home that is both practical and poetic.
